CONECA (pronounced: CŌ´NECA) is a national numismatic organization devoted to the education of error and variety coin collectors. CONECA focuses on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, Repunched mintmarks, multiple errors, clips, double strikes, off-metals and off-centers—just to name a few. In addition to its website, CONECA publishes an educational journal, The Errorscope, which is printed and mailed to members bimonthly. CONECA offers a lending library, examination, listing and attribution services; it holds annual meetings at major conventions (referred to as Errorama) around the country.

CONECA was formed through a merger of CONE and NECA in early 1983. To learn more about the fascinating HISTORY OF THE ERROR HOBBY and THE HISTORY OF CONECA, we encourage you to visit us our main site Here

    The true origin of 1888/7

The true practices of the 1888 Philadelphia mint. The attached penny started an investigation that will alter the current theory of 1888/7. and lead to the requirement for a new variety of 1888 pennies as well as a new error classification. The attached multi struck worn coin, is the last of 1888 variety 10 due to a broken 3rd 8 on the working die known as obverse 1. the 1888 Philadelphia tool room chose to grind down and rehub and redate, which created a failed test run of pennies known as 1888/7

I am here because I want to get to the point that this coin and other discoveries can be correctly attributed. They cannot be correctly attributed currently because of long held assumptions that this investigation should append to the body of knowledge related to 1888 at a minimum.

So I will start the topic with the first coin. It will show how difficult it would be to get certified. but it is the first coin, to be followed by a series of high grade coins used to prove its actual attributes at the time it was produced.

In my opinion, those photos are quite dark on a tablet that is on defaulted setting. I highly recommend to people when photographing coins, if a monitor is involved in the process that everything in that process be at default levels, like 50 % brightness and contrast. This way, whomever looks at the photos, no matter the setting, should be able to see the example without question.

The study is based on the following series of 1888 cents from the Variety working die set that created 1888/7.

The discovery of a new type of error.

        A new error classification.

        Rehubbed Worn Reverse.

Distinguished by a clearly defined step that separates the growth at the base of the feature and the master hubs original shape at the top of the feature. The difference of number 3 (V51) and 4 (V new) is showing the rehubbing of the reverse die whose growing features are now impacted and divided clearly. A distinctive new error type. RWR.
