The true practices of the 1888 Philadelphia mint. The attached penny started an investigation that will alter the current theory of 1888/7. and lead to the requirement for a new variety of 1888 pennies as well as a new error classification. The attached multi struck worn coin, is the last of 1888 variety 10 due to a broken 3rd 8 on the working die known as obverse 1. the 1888 Philadelphia tool room chose to grind down and rehub and redate, which created a failed test run of pennies known as 1888/7
I am here because I want to get to the point that this coin and other discoveries can be correctly attributed. They cannot be correctly attributed currently because of long held assumptions that this investigation should append to the body of knowledge related to 1888 at a minimum.
So I will start the topic with the first coin. It will show how difficult it would be to get certified. but it is the first coin, to be followed by a series of high grade coins used to prove its actual attributes at the time it was produced.
