1962-D RPM-003 / Possible Clash on Obverse
Today I was looking at my 1962-D Washington Quarter, which I believe has the attributes of the RPM-003. Several die cracks can be found on both sides. What struck me as odd, is a gear shaped imprint on Washington’s cheek. I am curious if the imprint is a die clash or PMD.You do not have permission to view this gallery.

In my opinion, although gallery photos may look appealing to some, they are a pain to try and zoom in and try to assess what is going on.
We would need a nice straight on photo of the mint mark, centered in the photo. Back then they hammered the mintmark into the working dies, and each one has a slightly different location.
The gear like marks might simply be reeding from another coin being dropped on it. The reeding could be from any coin, from a quarter to a dollar in size. The reeding is on the thinnest portion of the coin.Gary Kozera

Thanks, Gary. The file size limitations is what led me to the gallery view. I was able to reduce the size of the photos. Let me know if these work for you.PICT0008.jpg

If I look closely at the example listed on variety vista, the appearance on the southern part of the mintmark(s) is different. Maybe some one else can give it a try and see if this is a match. Gut feeling tells me this is not a match, but I could be wrong.
I see machine doubling on the coin, so that is kinda swaying my opinion. The die cracks that variety vista shows, may not be there IF this coin is die stage A. IF it is older than Stage A, then I would expect to see at least a few of the die cracks in the coin in the locations where variety vista shows them.
I personally do not get many emails from this website. I have shut off most notifications. It's usually time and luck-of-the draw whether I circle around to older posts. I disliked the number of inbound emails I was receiving from this website so now, its much better.
