In my opinion, the easiest way to tell is the size of the 2 in the date.
If it's a large, normal looking "2" like this one, it's a small date.
If the 2 is sort of smaller and fancy looking, it's a large date.
Some people can tell by the size of the top part of the 8, if that is smaller, more "snowman" looking, it's a small date.
If the holes in the 8 are the same size, like this 8, it's a large date.

I will admit, I am not a huge fan of zinc Lincolns.
