CONECA (pronounced: CŌ´NECA) is a national numismatic organization devoted to the education of error and variety coin collectors. CONECA focuses on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, Repunched mintmarks, multiple errors, clips, double strikes, off-metals and off-centers—just to name a few. In addition to its website, CONECA publishes an educational journal, The Errorscope, which is printed and mailed to members bimonthly. CONECA offers a lending library, examination, listing and attribution services; it holds annual meetings at major conventions (referred to as Errorama) around the country.

CONECA was formed through a merger of CONE and NECA in early 1983. To learn more about the fascinating HISTORY OF THE ERROR HOBBY and THE HISTORY OF CONECA, we encourage you to visit us our main site Here

  • 1979 D dime

Hi I found this dime and am not quite sure why the mint mark looks this way. Is this dye deterioration around it? I’ve never come across this before. Many thanks!

In my opinion, It might be die deterioration, or it might simply be a clogged mint mark. The mintmark is incused or sunk into the working dies. This will begin to clog over time due to metal chips, grease or debris. Eventually the working die may get maintenance and it may be cleared of debris.

Before the 1990s the US mint hammered the mintmarks into the working dies. The working dies then produced coins, for dimes, probably close to 500,000 or so, before the end of it's service life.

After 1990 or so, the mint mark became part of the design, basically eliminating any varieties associated with mintmarks.
