CONECA focuses on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, Repunched mintmarks, multiple errors, clips, double strikes, off-metals and off-centers—just to name a few. In addition to its website, CONECA publishes an educational journal, The Errorscope, which is printed and mailed to members bimonthly. CONECA offers a lending library, examination, listing and attribution services; it holds annual meetings at major conventions (referred to as Errorama) around the country.

  • 1990 Lincoln DDR? Rim damage and die crack

IMG_20240611_174907.jpeg This 1990 penny is in great shape but has some damage. It looks like rim damage due to misaligned strike which might have created. What looks like a DDR. Also see a crack. What do you think? IMG_6077.jpeg IMG_6078.jpeg IMG_20240611_174822.jpeg IMG_20240611_174934.jpeg IMG_20240611_174917.jpeg IMG_20240611_174934.jpeg IMG_20240611_174907.jpeg

In my opinion, the area that is showing blue in color is actually called split plating damage. This damage is caused when the strike is a bit too strong and damages/penetrates the top copper layer, exposing the zinc core.

Die cracks happen quite frequently and unless they are super-dramatic usually do not bring collector interest nor any additional value.

Thank you, Gary for the detailed explanation. I appreciate it. I am new to collecting so I don’t know what is a value increasing error and what isn’t yet. I am I’m concentrating on learning as much as I can on how coins are damaged.
