What's going on with the obverse rim gouge under the date & Lincoln's bust ?

In my opinion, it could be a slight mis-aligned die. It could have been planchet based as well.
The obverse die is heavily abraded.
There is something on Lincolns coat as well. Looking at the Y in LIBERTY, there is either a strike through, lamination or a die crack that goes on Lincoln from slight Southeast of the Y in LIBERTY, and then it travels south / south east la ding about dead center on Lincoln south near the rim. I cannot tell what that is. It could be anything from what i said above or even a stray hair or piece of thread.
The reverse is abraded as well. The reverse MIGHT have a die crack. If you look at the designer initials (FG) it is south of that. If I see anything else i will edit this post.
The heavy abrading may have been done to cover up a strong die clash or, it could have been an over zealous mint worker scrubbing the dies too vigorously.Last edited by MintErrors; 02-07-2025, 08:16 PM.Gary Kozera
