    1963-D Penny

    Hello all

I am new to this site, but not to collecting.

Been looking at penny's for over 50 years.

I found this penny amongst others from a penny roll. Opinions?

Opinions about what may I ask? Is it about a variety or potential error ?

      No.

I was just surprised to pull this from a recent bank roll. It is such a high grade for the 1963.

I do know that it is probably

      1963-D 1˘ WDDO-001 stage 3 per Wexlers.

Additionally, I read in PCGS from Jaime Hernandez that these are extremely rare. Quoted from PCGS.

The 1963-D is the toughest Lincoln cent from 1930 to date to find in MS66 red condition, even tougher than the 1931-s in MS66 red.
The second toughest is in ms66 red after 1930 is 1962-D and 1973-S being the third toughest in MS66 grades. most are found with nicks, specks, spots and scratches.

      Respectfully, I was just surprised.

PS I have both the 1962-D and 1973-S in high raw grades.

The CONECA forum rules frown on talking about raw grades of coins or their value. So I side step those questions.

Yep, a lot of 1960s have planchet problems. That 1963 CONECA DDO 001 is neat I have a handful of them in storage.

I have a short population list of graded Lincolns to watch for. In my opinion collectors tend to get sticker shock on the higher priced high grade Red Lincolns for certain years and will eventually obtain something at a lower price. Unless those who do registry sets, then those peeps do what they want.

Those years mentioned do have issues. I have a few bags of Lincolns in storage that I will eventually finish. Other priorities came along.

images are decent but way too over-exposed. so the coin doesn't look that nice from our end. fwiw

also it is not likely we can assit with most varieties w/o close-ups.

good post though and nice presentation. i like when images are NOT added as attachemnts. so much quicker.

            Thanks for the responses gentleman.

I appreciate the support and will ensure at least my images get better when posting.

I know how frustrating it is on photo's.

Thanks again and really enjoy this site.

              Hello solsgt54,
Please read what Gary. MintErrors posted in the link attached to the forum. It took me quit a while to fix your photo and I have a learning tip for you.
              1) when you are looking for a variety on a mintmarked coin. Always check mintmark position FIRST.
The photo presented is tilted - that is why my overlay is perfect on the 1 but not the 963
The photo presented undernieth is a copy of 1963-D DDO-001. Your mintmark position does not match.
              It cannot be 1963-D DDO-001 1963-D-DDO-001_Eric.jpg 1963-D-DDO-001_Eric_Coneca_Ovly.jpg

I use paint dot net for my overlays. Its free.
What you can do in paint dot net is hover over a corner.
A double arrow will appear. You can then move/tilt the photo to your liking if it is a bit tilted.

I will probably do a tutorial on paint dot net - how to do overlays to allow people to understand why overlays are important and how relatively easy it can be to do basic overlays to check mint mark placement for re-punched mint marks as well as doubled dies.

Plus - it may save some people some precious time on here not having to do as many overlays.

Here is a better photo showing some kind of date error.

Per your suggestion I obtained paint.net and have been fiddling with it with some success. An overlay tutorial would be much appreciated!

A comment on getting the software. I ended up paying a minimal fee and and downloading it from the Microsoft site. The free versions had viruses

Where did you get the free version from?

The website that the author uses is https://getpaint.net/
                        • For overlays, size the photos pretty close to the same.
                        • You can use regular Paint from Microsoft to resize photos.
                        • You want at least one number to match or be real close. Example 600x450 pixels. Ensure the photos have some background or date so you can attempt lining up those devices to see if the mint mark is in the same location.
                        • Open up paint dot net
                        • Go to the LAYERS menu
                        • From the LAYERS menu choose your first photo by "Import from File". I typically do the photo of my coin on the bottom layer.
                        • Import the second photo the same way.,
                        • Under the LAYERS menu at the very bottom is PROPERTIES. Use the pull down menu to choose MULTIPLY.
                        • Under the LAYERS properties, you can use the slide bar to change the transparency/Opacity of the top layer photo.
                        • If you HOVER over a corner, a double sided arrow will appear. This allows you to tilt a photo if the photo itself is not positioned square horizontally/vertically.

The overlay tutorial isn't hard to do, its just getting the screen shots and typing it all up.
I am knee deep in projects and I eventually will get to doing the tutorial.
But for now, I hope the quick version of the tutorial will suffice.

CONECA forum rules state one coin per post, it cuts down on confusion.
Its not my rules, as I too am a regular member but I thought I would let you know.

Lighting is the #1 pain to master. It will probably change for every coin,
