  • Requesting your assistance w/ a 2007 Silver Proof Set W/ 1 Cent Error

    Hello fellow collectors;
    I have received my shipment from the mint for the 2007 Silver Proof set and found an "error?" on the 1 cent which I like for some one to explain. The error is difficult for me to explain as I am new to the error and variety collecting but I will try. Here is a description

    A piece of metal of what looks like the rim came off but remains attached on one end to the rim, yet it floats "just barely" above the surface. It is about 1/4 of an inch long and obscures most the "LI" in LIBERTY. It is highly polished to a mirror finish just like the rest of the coin is. What is strange is that it floats just above the surface and if the coin is tilted at 45 degrees then the entire word LIBERTY is clearly visible. This sliver of metal does not leave any marks on the surface of the coin.

    I am also new to this site and still struggling to learn how to use this forum. I have tried to attach pictures but was unable to reduce the file size to upload it on this site. Having said all that, I truly would appreciate it if some one would contact me via email with their description of this error. I will send you pictures via email. My email is mkotaich@hotmail.com. Thank you so kindly for your assistance.

    Hi mkotaich,

    It is fairly hard to say what that piece of metal is without some sort of picture.

    One of the best ways to get pictures on tis forum, or at least what I have found, is to open a free account at photobucket.com. They will automatically resize your picture for use in this forum. Or, if you would like, e-mail me the pictures and I'll get them on this thread. My address is wavysteps2003@aol.com.

    Once the pictures are on the forum, it will be easier to see what is up.

    Hope that this helps. By the way, welcome to the forum!!!

      In advance of your photo, I'd have to say that it's most likely post-strike damage. Any metal that is sitting loosely on the surface of the coin must have been gouged up after the strike.

          Hi Mo,

          The pictures that you took are post in your opening thread. I did crop them a bit so that the piece of metal shows up a bit better. Now we can let the error PROS take a look and see what they think.

            Since the piece of metal is reported as sitting above the level of the field, it would represent post-strike damage. If the damage occurred before the strike, the piece of metal would be flush with the field. The damage may have been caused by the ejection mechanism, but it's impossible to say for sure.
