no initials apparent
I have been concentrating on 1988 Lincoln with 1989 initials. Today I found a 1988-D with no initials (MS-60). Can someone let me know if there is an FSO number for this omission similar to the Missing Designers Initials on the 1966 Kennedy half (FWS-50-1966-901) Will appreciate any advice.Tags: None

Since the absence of designer's initials is one of the more common errors on the Lincoln cent, they are not cataloged as such. The two common causes for these missing design elements are; over abrading of the die in that area, which was very apt to happen in the 1980s and grease filled design element.
The same can be said for the V. D. B. on the obverse die. The over abrading of that element has caused that design to disappear as well at times. However, not from being grease filled, since that design is raised on the die.

The 1966 Kennedy half with missing designer's initial on the reverse came from the special mint set for that year, which was supposed to be less prone to have errors???
Since very few of that error have been documented, it is considered rare and has an added premium to the coin's (and set, if still contained within) value.
