I know the opinion is MD but do you think there is any possibility this coin was an initial attempt to down size the lettering on the reverse ? I was thinking about this as the lettering was down sized by the mint during this year and both large and small reverse letters were minted. I am also going to get this coin out of storage and check the weight as it is in such nice condition comparitively to any other 1976 D coins I have. I am hoping it is one of the rare 40% silver 1976 D coins now known to be in existance.Attached Files

No. Its not an attemot to "downsize" the lettering. That was actually a change in font styles from a broad-flat, low relief non-serifed font, to a narrow, high relief serifed font.
Additionally, the color on your coin simply does not look like a 40% Silver Piece.Lee Lydston
