I know the opinion is MD but do you think there is any possibility this coin was an initial attempt to down size the lettering on the reverse ? I was thinking about this as the lettering was down sized by the mint during this year and both large and small reverse letters were minted. I am also going to get this coin out of storage and check the weight as it is in such nice condition comparitively to any other 1976 D coins I have. I am hoping it is one of the rare 40% silver 1976 D coins now known to be in existance.Attached Files

No. Its not an attemot to "downsize" the lettering. That was actually a change in font styles from a broad-flat, low relief non-serifed font, to a narrow, high relief serifed font.

Additionally, the color on your coin simply does not look like a 40% Silver Piece.Lee Lydston

Not only that but E PLURIBUS UNUM is different on the two different types. The 1st U in UNUM is nearly centered under U in PLURIBUS on the Type 1 but off to the left of that U in the Type 2 coin.Originally posted by cents1st View PostDiamond is correct. The type I over type II or tII/tI would a drastic variety, it would be naked-eye at arms-length, no questions.Last edited by 19Lyds; 02-28-2012, 03:50 PM.Lee Lydston
