Opinions on this 1917 Penny!
I have this coin that I come across and it stands out from the rest of the 1917 pennies I have. The coin has a detailed hard strike, a very catching eye appeal, the messed up G in GOD and a matte like appearance. I know the very existence of a 1917 Matte Proof is controversial, but this coin may possibly be one. I took the penny and stood it on its edge at 180 degree intervals all the way around without effort. Also, compared it side by side to a 1917 Business coin I have, of which I took a photo and is the one on the left. If you could review the photos, it would be greatly appreciate your opinion.Tags: None

Like you mentioned some 1917 business strikes have been alleged to be proofs. We know according to the Mint that Proof coinage for collectors ended in 1916. It resumed in 1936 when some satin proof cents and nickels were made. They were similar in appearance to but were not from the matte proof dies.
With all that mumbo jumbo being said, I have seen quite a few extremely nice early Lincolns that had rims like yours. I can not say for sure what you have there, but my OPINION is that you have a very well struck earlier die state coin. The rims could be that nice because the collar was new (another guess).Bob Piazza
