CONECA (pronounced: CŌ´NECA) is a national numismatic organization devoted to the education of error and variety coin collectors. CONECA focuses on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, Repunched mintmarks, multiple errors, clips, double strikes, off-metals and off-centers—just to name a few. In addition to its website, CONECA publishes an educational journal, The Errorscope, which is printed and mailed to members bimonthly. CONECA offers a lending library, examination, listing and attribution services; it holds annual meetings at major conventions (referred to as Errorama) around the country.

    1983 D error in UNITED

    I found this 1983 coin with an obvious mark in the D in the word UNITED. It can be seen the naked eye. I'm very new .. don't have a trained eye yet ..and I was curious as to what this is called. I appreciate any assistance. Thanks!

        The mark you mentioned above/behind/below the "D" as well as another, smaller mark to the right - can't quite tell from the photos if they are raised or incuse. Can you tell? If they are raised this appears to be a scratch/scrape on the surface of the die, resulting in a raised feature on the coin (but not cutting deeply into the device as to be seen in the D itself).

          Might be a planchet error? It looks like its under the D but it is raised. It appears like the D was placed on top the marking.

            That looks like a gouge on the field of the die. All of the devices including the letter D would have been sunk into the die and the gouge would not affect it at all.
