1968 D Lincoln Cent Question about Reverse
Found this 1968 D Penny would like some help with bay 7, 8 and 9. - Possible Die Chip / Die Subversive error? Also I believe it is a 1968-D DDO-002, 2-O-II-E Stage B. The die chip, if that is what it is, threw me off a little. Any thoughts would help.Tags: None

What you are seeing in the Memorial bays is the remnants of a rather strong die clash. That area would be the remnants from the front neck area of Lincoln's profile. As far as the doubled die reference goes, I can't tell based on these photos.

That is so cool. Thank you for your help. I am very appreciative for your example pictures as well. It is amazing to learn this hobby. When I get a few minutes I will post a few pictures with arrows pointing to the areas that match the double die reference. I want to be sure I am being accurate and actually identifying areas and not just seeing things. I did that a lot especially in the beginning and it was hard to find someone to actually answer my questions. I am glad I joined CONECA. Too many people out there are just trying to make money and not enjoying the hobby. Thanks again. Very cool. Excited to say the least.Last edited by JonC136; 06-23-2021, 02:31 PM.

Here is the best I can do. I saved some pictures with arrows but I am not sure it loaded properly. The coin is not the best quality so you have to look but it is especially seen in Liberty. On the last column of the bay you cane see the die crack through the middle of the column. The 8 shape matches. You have to look but there is a mark right by the bridge of the nose that is visible. I feel pretty good about it fitting and again you have to look because of the circulation of the coin. 1968-D DDO-002, 2-O-II-E Stage B on variety vista's page is where I made the comparisons. Also the east die scratches by the O in one. Almost forgot that one. It might be hard for you to see that one. I tried to get the right angle but they are there.

Marker photos are useless unless you have the doubled die to begin with. That is what I am trying to determine. The doubling on DDO-002 in mostly on the obverse motto. Can you get pictures of that? If you can, we can go from there.Bob Piazza

Here are the pictures. Also is the line through Lincoln's head a die crack, clash, or something that was in the die.

This is definitely not a doubled die obverse. Something to keep in mind is that this was the last year before a design chance made the devices sharper and not running into the rim. The doubling on 1968 cents was pretty easy to see, especially on the S of TRUST. That was my pickup point for varieties this year.Bob Piazza
