CONECA (pronounced: CŌ´NECA) is a national numismatic organization devoted to the education of error and variety coin collectors. CONECA focuses on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, Repunched mintmarks, multiple errors, clips, double strikes, off-metals and off-centers—just to name a few. In addition to its website, CONECA publishes an educational journal, The Errorscope, which is printed and mailed to members bimonthly. CONECA offers a lending library, examination, listing and attribution services; it holds annual meetings at major conventions (referred to as Errorama) around the country.

CONECA was formed through a merger of CONE and NECA in early 1983. To learn more about the fascinating HISTORY OF THE ERROR HOBBY and THE HISTORY OF CONECA, we encourage you to visit us our main site Here

    1964 D LMC, Opinions Welcomed

    Hello all,
I know my post is a little of topic, but I could really use some help. I have found a very nice 1964 D penny and I would like to know if any of you think I should send it off for grading. I saw a PCGS MS67RD that sold at auction for $504 and attempted to add a photo to this post but the file size was too large. I don't believe mine is an MS67 specimen, but I also feel it doesn't fall terribly far below that level. I took the best photos I could manage. Please share your thoughts if you feel so inclined. I will be away until Monday when I will check for any replies, which will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks very much and have a great day!

The CONECA Rules frown on talking about grading and prices. So, I'll pass on this one.

Auctions are subjective...depends on where, when and how many people participated. A lot of others factors contribute to the hammer price.

One thing PCGS and NGC do is guarantee the color of the coin I think for 10 years in the slab. After that they would like to see it again for another assessment to determine if it is still Red. Ummmmm Over time, in my opinion, coins will eventually go from Red to another color.

MANY of my clients, they do the Potomac Two-Step on high priced Red Lincolns, since they are terribly expensive in the higher grades and go with Red-Brown or one MS level lower, or until they are comfortable with the final buying price.

One needs to closely look at the entire cost of getting a coin slabbed, from the postage sending it in, grading cost and return postage costs. then if the coin comes back within the desired range of grading, an it is sent off to an auction house, it first has to be "approved" for it to be auctioned (at most places - it has to bring the house a decent fee) and if it accepted and sold, there could be a significant fee attached to the sale.

Ebay auction hammer prices are all over the place on coins. Fees typically are close to 10% ( or more) and may have other fees associated with the potential sale.

      Gary,
Thank you for your reply. I was unaware of the forum rules and to date have not been able to locate them anywhere on the site. The last thing I want to do is jeopardize my standing with this great group.
I understand the risks associated with sending coins to PCGS or other services and I'm a little gun shy as my faith in my own determinations is still in the works. Who knows, I may pony up just for the experience. Also, my apologies for the late reply. I was away and had a lot on my plate when I returned home, feeling a bit caught up now.
Once again, thank you for your insights, they are greatly appreciated!

Forum Protocols: A) Understand: This is a free VOLUNTEER forum. There are experts and other volunteers here trying to assist with questions about numismatic errors and varieties. Be patient. Someone with the specific knowledge needed may not be available. It happens. Allow at least ten days for a response in some cases.
