CONECA focuses on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, Repunched mintmarks, multiple errors, clips, double strikes, off-metals and off-centers—just to name a few. In addition to its website, CONECA publishes an educational journal, The Errorscope, which is printed and mailed to members bimonthly. CONECA offers a lending library, examination, listing and attribution services; it holds annual meetings at major conventions (referred to as Errorama) around the country.

  • New Member Introduction and Discovery Attribution Question

Hello my name is Mychal Hayes.

I am not yet a paying member of CONECA but do plan to soon.
My father and I have been coin collecting ever since I can remember. We have just recently started error hunting and learning the ins and outs of errors and terminology. I am excited to be part of a great group who share common interests in the hobby.

Regarding the Discovery attribution for a new error, would I submit this under attributions forum?

If it is a strike through, it won't be a discovery piece. it is simply an error.

    Let me explain.

Error coins are typically unique.. each coin presented is struck or has different issues,, so there usually is no pattern to identify.

With varieties, the issue is related to a variation on the die. This die then strikes numerous coins.
Many of these coins can be of the same die state or die stage. Pick up points or markers on the coin can be found per die stage. These are usually discovery worthy IFit is something significant to note and is not part of another finding. In other words, the varieties are almost trackable, attributable, and can be cataloged.

People get hung up on "new discovery", when all this does is add their name to a photo on a web page that may or may not be seen, Additionally, most varieties that are 30 + years old are pretty well documented, and there are not many new varieties out there for those, if any at all.

Errors that are very dramatic may be worth sending in to a 3rd party grading service. You have to weigh the cost of mailing the item to the grading company, the cost of the encapsulation, the fees incurred for the error and the high priced (with insurance) return shipping.

For peace of mind and protection of the coin, these can outweigh the logical approach of value if the coin is for personal use.

CONECA does have a forum area to ask if this is worthy of sending in, IF I remember correctly, you start a post under examinations. Examinations for errors, and attributions is tied to varieties.

Thank you for the information. The error on this coin was a struck thru and with feeding fingers, I found 7 or more with the same error. Would that still be considered a verity? As I can see a pattern within the error which caught my eye to begin with?

      I appreciate your explanation.

Feeder finger damage is still an error and not a variety. You are saying it is struck through, but in reality, it would be a scrape unless I am misunderstanding you. Once the feeder finger scrapes the die, then everything struck after that will be similar in appearance. No matter what, it will technically never be a variety.
