I agree with Bob. See how it looks step like ?
Also look at how much narrower/smaller the bottom of that D is compared to the top.
If you were able to raise that area back to the same height, it would look like one mormal D, without any extra width. Last thing, typically the last, top mint mark of a RPM is typically the strongest, and should be almost normal looking or a tad wider, sometimes higher or lower, tilted, split serifs or other indicators...
