I suggest researching
Longacre doubling
I bought the 2 volume electronic version of Rick Snow's Fling Eagle and Indian Head cent varieties book(s). In my opinion, it's a great reference with great descriptions and photographs. At the end of each year/section he gives a summary and some have cross reference numbers to other organizations.
I like to look to see if an example was already documented. If I do not see a variety listed, and it's questionable whether it's a variety or not, I would place them in the non variety wooden boxes and move on.
Now, if it is a variety that slaps me across the head and not listed, that great but I have to check the counterfeit listings and then consult some one that's well versed in Indian Head cents.
I will add that the Indian Head cent has quite a few varieties, mainly repunched dates. It depends on the collectors taste and their budget, equipment and time. If I had to start over, I would probably would have collected more Indian Head cents, since almost every year does have some sort of variety.Gary Kozera
