    Double Struck 1795 LCC

    Howdy fellow error freaks,

I recently acquired a no date Liberty Cap Cent that I have attributed as a 1795 plain edge S-78. What's interesting about it is it has a doubled profile but the doubling isn't evenly spaced so I belive it was double struck.

    Opinions are greatly appreciated.

Too bad this coin wasn't in better shape. It is a significant find if it is in fact double struck.

I am sure that Mike will get on this one. It does look like it was double struck and I would have liked to have seen it in at least a G-4.

It may indeed have been double struck. But a lot of early cents show strong doubling of the face that presumably represents the 18th century equivalent of machine doubling. There's no way to determine which type of error this is, given the advanced state of wear and associated heavy damage.
