CONECA (pronounced: CŌ´NECA) is a national numismatic organization devoted to the education of error and variety coin collectors. CONECA focuses on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, Repunched mintmarks, multiple errors, clips, double strikes, off-metals and off-centers—just to name a few. In addition to its website, CONECA publishes an educational journal, The Errorscope, which is printed and mailed to members bimonthly. CONECA offers a lending library, examination, listing and attribution services; it holds annual meetings at major conventions (referred to as Errorama) around the country.

    "BIE" variety or not??

    Hello all,

    Although I am new at coin varieties/errors, something about the "E" in this 1959 lincoln cent and the 1st nine in the date of the second 1959 lincoln cent that has me curious. Your input is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

      The "E" appears to show some minor die damage. Probably a die dent or a die gouge. The small dot in the "9" is also probably minor die damage.

          I agree with Mike. Both of these areas appear to be die cracks/gouges. It would not be worth your time and/or $$ to have this coin looked at. This is actually pretty common for the time frame.

              I see that this coin is cud or a crack. I have many BIE 1955-S uncirculated condition and the amount of break in-between the B and E is very noticeable. I am getting graded from what I know at this moment to be the only one around a 1983 BIE lincoln cent from NGC. I will post this coin when I get it back in late march. I am away from my computer but my avatar photo is a 1955-S BIE.
              Collecting is time consuming, but at the end it's worth every penny!

                A "BIE" error is a die chip, nothing more. It is no more valuable and no more interesting than any other die chip. Sending it to NGC makes no economic sense as BIE errors have zero market value. But if you want to throw your money away, that's entirely your prerogative.

                  I have to disagree with you that your the only one with a 1983 BIE..I posted one a while ago and its a pretty big one at that..I think the title is something like Grandmother of all BIEs..I have to also disagree with Mike D. because BIE are pretty common but when they get pretty big collectors are will to pay for them, even thou its no more than $3-10 at most.

                    Well thanks to let me know you had 1983 BIE. You are the first one to tell me this and I have searched and came across 1996 BIE which looked like a dot instead of a big giant piece. And yes it is up to anybody to grade what they want mr diamond I happen to find these errors neat! So now thare will be a 1983 BIE NOTED AND CERTIFIED FROM NGC FOR MY COLLECTION. I will share this when it comes back to me for others to hopefully like. I found this coin by the way looking for the famous 1983 COPPER CENT. Thanks jmcoinz

                      Die chip on the "9" and die gouge thru the "E" in LIBERTY. I collect this type of coin and I see them alot. A keeper if you like it. I like 'em...
