CONECA (pronounced: CŌ´NECA) is a national numismatic organization devoted to the education of error and variety coin collectors. CONECA focuses on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, Repunched mintmarks, multiple errors, clips, double strikes, off-metals and off-centers—just to name a few. In addition to its website, CONECA publishes an educational journal, The Errorscope, which is printed and mailed to members bimonthly. CONECA offers a lending library, examination, listing and attribution services; it holds annual meetings at major conventions (referred to as Errorama) around the country.

CONECA was formed through a merger of CONE and NECA in early 1983. To learn more about the fascinating HISTORY OF THE ERROR HOBBY and THE HISTORY OF CONECA, we encourage you to visit us our main site Here

  • Help on determining 1983 50c

Hi all, I have searched and searched but can not find anything similar. Is there anyone who can determine what these "V" cuts are on this coin?
There are three additional photos to upload, I will post these in a followup.

I can't quite tell what you mean by "V" cuts. Could you be a bit more specific as to what you mean and where you see them? The only thing I can see is some strike doubling on the "E" in the fourth photo.

I should have been more specific with my question, I know, and I am shocked to finally get a response. On the letters of "LIBERTY" there are these "V" shapes, I now believe them to be die deterioration.
I posted a second part that got over eleven thousand views, and along with this post, you are the first to reply. I am new to coin collecting and wanted a good forum so I could get answers that I had trouble finding elsewhere on the web. Apparently, this was not the place for that.
Thank you for your time and efforts, Numismanut.

Now I can see what you are describing. I was looking in the field rather than on the devices. It might be die deterioration, as you mentioned, but it could also have occurred outside of the mint. The even distance away from the rim makes me think that a coin counter may have been a part of it, although usually the lines are more distinct with cutting into rather than cutting away the devices.

It's too bad no one else was able to reply earlier. I just joined a couple days ago but this doesn't seem like the most lively of places. I'm hoping that the quality of information is higher to make up for that, and perhaps some life will return as well.

Well, it sure isn't for the lack of traffic, there are plenty looking. Just wish more would contribute. I have been using coincommunity error forum lately, they do participate.
          Thanks again for your analysis.

It kind of looks like your coin may have been doublestruck in the collar with no rotation between strikes. what does the smaller letters and details on this coin look like?
