I should have been more specific with my question, I know, and I am shocked to finally get a response. On the letters of "LIBERTY" there are these "V" shapes, I now believe them to be die deterioration.
I posted a second part that got over eleven thousand views, and along with this post, you are the first to reply. I am new to coin collecting and wanted a good forum so I could get answers that I had trouble finding elsewhere on the web. Apparently, this was not the place for that.
Thank you for your time and efforts, Numismanut.

Now I can see what you are describing. I was looking in the field rather than on the devices. It might be die deterioration, as you mentioned, but it could also have occurred outside of the mint. The even distance away from the rim makes me think that a coin counter may have been a part of it, although usually the lines are more distinct with cutting into rather than cutting away the devices.
It's too bad no one else was able to reply earlier. I just joined a couple days ago but this doesn't seem like the most lively of places. I'm hoping that the quality of information is higher to make up for that, and perhaps some life will return as well.
