CONECA (pronounced: CŌ´NECA) is a national numismatic organization devoted to the education of error and variety coin collectors. CONECA focuses on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, Repunched mintmarks, multiple errors, clips, double strikes, off-metals and off-centers—just to name a few. In addition to its website, CONECA publishes an educational journal, The Errorscope, which is printed and mailed to members bimonthly. CONECA offers a lending library, examination, listing and attribution services; it holds annual meetings at major conventions (referred to as Errorama) around the country.

    1992 P Kennedy Half bald on side of head

    Trying to find out more info on this 1992 P Kennedy Half
    The "bald" part of the hair seems to be at the same level as the planchet surface.
    The part at the top of Kennedy's head is also wider than usual and it also appears to be the same level as the planchet surface.

    also how do I go about getting this attributed by CONECA (or elsewhere)?

    This is evidence of a struck through grease error. Since the rest of the coin struck up well, the struck through grease scenario is probably the most accurate.

      Could it be that the low relief design was struck so lightly that the deepest details didn't get struck? Also wouldn't struck through grease impact all the details on the coin? Only the shallowest areas of the design are flattened on this coin.

        It is possible that it is a light strike, but more of the coin would be affected. the area in question is all incuse on the die, therefore, having grease in the lowest areas of the die could have this effect by not striking up properly. Having said that, I do not have the die in hand, and everything I am telling you is an educated analysis. You may be able to send it to an error specialist who may add more to this mystery.

          Yeah that is kinda what I was asking, how do I go about getting the coin in the hands of an expert/specialist to get an attribution? I'm a brand new CONECA member, doesn't CONECA certify new errors?

            I am an attributer for variety coins and not errors. I will see if I or another moderator can get this to the right people. There should be instructions on how to do that on the CONECA main Web Site.

              I do not see why an examiner (not an attributer) would need to see this in person as the photos are clear. And as Bob noted it is a struck thru grease error.
