  • Kennedy half dollar 1970-d ddo ,rpm ?

This is a 1970-d kennedy half dollar from a mint set. I looked on Vista Variety and found nothing for that year. I was looking for RPM , to the left of mint mark it looks like it ? Then I noticed double serif on the D in the word GOD , and the word TRUST looks real funny , big and thick, some have double serif, and the letter U looks tripled serif. What is your opinion? Thanks.

Interesting coin.... I think you are looking at a mix of die deterioration and doubling. I am 99% sure you have a doubled die on your hands, but I will let Bob give the final word, this might be a new discovery! Great find!

This certainly looks like a doubled die to me. The mintmark is most likely MD, but there seems to be little doubt this is a nice, strong DDO.

Thanks Bob Piazza for taking time to look at my coin. I appreciate your expertise. Does that mean this is a discovery coin? Have a great day.

It would be a 'First Reported' coin at the least. Some graders use the terminology 'Discovery Coin', when it is accompanied with a letter from the attributer to verify it.

I don’t see an RPM on your mintmark, it looks like MDD. When I look at your photo of TRUST I think it is a good example of the Master Die Obverse, 70D MDO-001 in the CONECA Master Listings. The description in the listing says, Medium extra thickness on TY of LIBERTY, WE TRUST, and 70 of date, strength of doubling will vary depending upon hub and die state. Attached below is a photo of TRUST from the 70D MDO-001 in my collection. When I look at your photos of IN GOD, my opinion is that it might show reflection and glare doubling from LED feedback lighting. You can prove what is going on if you reduce the light some, reduce the magnification some, and take photos at several different angles. Not a doubled die.
