1971-D Kennedy Half Dollar DDO

Pulled this from a bag of halves today. Hard to believe they're still out there after 50 years. Or did someone dump it into circulation from a collection? It's a nice example but it has some damage on the obv. on his ear and jaw.

Once the economy goes down hill, you are likely to find more and more nice varieties/errors as folks just turn in their collections for cash. This is a nice DDO.

Very, very nice DDO! I love it! I hope I find a doubled die half dollar eventually. Just curious, how did you come by the bag of halves?

I think you should have posted in the Variety Forum, not the Mint Error Forum. I see you have a DDO with some MDD (Machine Damage Doubling) also. Note the MDD on IN GOD. When I try to attribute these 50c 71D’s, the first thing I do is see if they are the ODV-002 or ODV-003 (weak R or Strong R), yours is the ODV-002. That rules out a lot of the CONECA listings. When I compare your photos with what is in my collection, for the ODV-002 with the listings I see two that have the notching on the top right of the T in LIBERTY, DDO-009 and DDO-016. When you compare the notching on the E of LIBERTY you can see yours matches the DDO-009. James Wiles never had any markers for the -009, but on my stage B a good marker might be the north-south curved die scratch from the head to the right under the R of LIBERTY, see attached photo. This marker can be seen on the stage C and D, don’t have a stage A example. Your half dollar would be the 71D DDO-009 with some MDD.

CoinHunter- One of the banks in my area has a coin counting machine. I've never actually seen it. It's not available to the public. It's in their back office. I'm thinking the machine is something like a CoinStar.

Apparently, when costumers come in with rolled or lose coins, the tellers "have to" run them all through this machine. The tellers are not allowed to re-issue these coin to costumers for change. Besides these halves (and small dollar coins) are not popular, nobody wants them. When these bags fill-up, they get shipped out to the coin rolling companies.

These bags are a pain in the butt to move around (especially for the ladies), and they all hate dealing with them. The bottom-line for me is: I'm at the right place at the right time with the right teller. They say: Please take these off our hands. I'm doing them a big favor and they're doing me a BIG BIG favor!!
