  • 1958-D Cud?

    Hello Again To All,

I have several 1958-D Lincoln cents that have cud between the 9 and 5. Is this something that might be, or should be, catalogued somewhere? Appreciate your response. Thanks!

I believe what you have is what is referred to as a die chip, or interior die break. You might find http://cuds-on-coins.com/ a good reference site to help.

This is not considered a cud. A cud encompasses a portion of the rim. These are die cracks or chips and this one gets progressively larger as the dies continue to strike coins. As far as whether or not it should be cataloged somewhere, that would be up to the authors of certain books and sites dedicated to those anomalies. Die chips are so plentiful and change so often that they are difficult to catalogue. One site that lists some types of chips and die breaks is linked to below.
