CONECA (pronounced: CŌ´NECA) is a national numismatic organization devoted to the education of error and variety coin collectors. CONECA focuses on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, Repunched mintmarks, multiple errors, clips, double strikes, off-metals and off-centers—just to name a few. In addition to its website, CONECA publishes an educational journal, The Errorscope, which is printed and mailed to members bimonthly. CONECA offers a lending library, examination, listing and attribution services; it holds annual meetings at major conventions (referred to as Errorama) around the country.

CONECA was formed through a merger of CONE and NECA in early 1983. To learn more about the fascinating HISTORY OF THE ERROR HOBBY and THE HISTORY OF CONECA, we encourage you to visit us our main site Here

  • 1973-D Kennedy Half Dollar

    Hey everyone,

I am new to CONECA and to the world of coin collecting. I've had to opportunity to come across a few decent finds thus far. However, my knowledge in the area of errors is limited to say the least. I've done some reading online to gain additional information in this area but have not been able to come across anything similar to one of the coins I found recently.

This Kennedy half dollar came from an unsearched bank roll. It has several indentations on both sides of the coin that are rather deep (to the point where copper is visible). I'm curious if anyone can shed any light on this thing as to whether or not these may be strike errors from the mint or something else that has occurred after the fact. I have attached a couple of pictures for reference and can add more if necessary.

Thank you all in advance for any information you are able to provide!

    Looks like PSD to me.

It's a bird! It's a plane! Aw nuts... It's merely two die scratches!

They almost look like drill bit indentations to me. I would classify this as post mint damage. It occurred after it left the mint. Who knows exactly what happened, but in the end, it is damage.

That is all post mint damage. It appears someone used a drill on the coin.
