CONECA (pronounced: CŌ´NECA) is a national numismatic organization devoted to the education of error and variety coin collectors. CONECA focuses on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, Repunched mintmarks, multiple errors, clips, double strikes, off-metals and off-centers—just to name a few. In addition to its website, CONECA publishes an educational journal, The Errorscope, which is printed and mailed to members bimonthly. CONECA offers a lending library, examination, listing and attribution services; it holds annual meetings at major conventions (referred to as Errorama) around the country.

1909-d $5 gold Indian half eagle error ?

    1909-d $5 gold Indian half eagle error ?

    Hi ,
    I have come across this nice 1909-d $5 Indian gold half eagle that appears to have a unknown mint error ? If anyone could please elaborate on this I would be much obliged . It looks like there is no damage to the motto but does have damage to the wing ,slightest on breast and "U" in united . I'm guessing this happened in between steps in the minting process ? Also, how would I go about getting this attributed correctly and what would a fair price be on it ? Thanks

    This looks like something was pressed into the coin after it left the mint to me. I am thinking this is post mint damage (PMD). JMHO.

      I will leave this for other members who might have opinions on the gouge. As far as pricing, we do not do that here. That is an agreement between a buyer and a seller. You may want to do completed auction searches to find out what they have been selling for.

        @ sumdunce , I don't think it was after because the incuse letters are not showing damage on the motto .

          Gentlemen, Is this coin worthy of getting attributed and where to send for attribution ? I was thinking maybe Variety Vista ?

            This coin would not be attributed as it is not a variety. It could/should be examined though, by someone who is a specialist in the error field. We need to leave this here for a bit to see if anyone else has an opinion. Please be patient as most people are not on here daily. In the meantime, I will see if I can get someone to have a look at this thread and see if he has an opinion.
