1954 S FRANKLIN HALF STRUCK THROUGH GREASE OBVERSE AND REVERSE?
I am looking at a very nice 1954 S Franklin Half. It is brilliant white and hard to get picture. The coin appears to be struck through grease in four areas on the obverse and reverse of the coin. The coin is bright white and the struck throughs appear polished like a mirror. First, to the left of the 'T' in 'LIBERTY' on the obverse. Second, a large spot on the bottom of the eagles left wing and into the field. Third, the left bell hanger towards the top left of the bell. Fourth, midway up the right upright of 'O' and uprights on 'LLA' of 'DOLLAR'. Another soft struck 'S' mint mark however it could be a FBL on a good day (95% on a bad day). You are correct. There is some struck through grease areas on the coin. I can't tell if it's a FBL as there is no photo of this area. What you are calling a 'soft struck' S mintmark, has nothing to do with the strike since the mintmarks were hand punched into the die. It would have been a lightly punched mintmark, not soft struck.Bob Piazza

Hello Bob, The soft strike I was talking about was the general strike of the coin. The MM on the other has is very pronounced. Got a better pic of the struck through by the eagle (taken on an angle). I tried to get a pic of the bell lines but it is hard with a bright coin. Looks like it fails at the crack...maybe 95%. Thanks for the clarification. I am not sure if this coin would garner a FBL designation. I don't use Third Party Grading services at all, and don't understand their call on things like this. FBL and Full Steps and some other things they do just don't interest me enough to have someone else tell me it's nice (if you know what I mean :-))Bob Piazza
