  • Refrence List

I made the board for Jefferson nickels as well as for Lincoln cents. I got my information from "Strike it Rich with pocket change. I can't seem to locate a refrence list for Wheat cents, Indian Head cents, V nickel, buffalo nickel, barber and mercury dimes, standing Liberty and Barber quarters. Is there such a refrence available?

Most 'reference lists' are home made to show what the collector needs to know specific for his/her collection. What is is you want the lists for? I may be able to track something down for you.

I am using the lists to document the known varieties and errors on these coins. It helps me study them. I sort them by date and then I look for the specific variety or errors. When I do them this way it helps me to have the same date and coin to compare to the others.
I really appreciate all your help

This google search lists a lot of checklists you may want to look at. Either find something that works for you now, or maybe use them to design your own. I think many folks just use an excel spreadsheet to make theirs.

When you log into this website, on the FORUMS tab all the way to the bottom is a long list of reference sites.

I suggest looking at PCGS.com. Pick a coin series, like Indian head cents. When the list populates, it may not do all the years. You scroll all the way to the bottom on the list. Just below the last entry, to the left is a pull down menu. Make sure it is set to ALL. Now carefully starting at the top look at the years.

What you are looking for, to the LEFT of the date is a PLUS SIGN. Click on the plus sign, and it will reveal a hidden list of varieties that PCGS recognizes. It may not be an all inclusive list.

Additionally, on that PCGS website, You can change TABS at top of the page to see years focusing on circulated or uncirculated condition coins. You can also change from price list to known population of each type coin. There is a ton of information on that website.

The problem with any book or author is, they focus on what is important at the time they are doing the reference. Most are NOT all inclusive.

For indian head cents, the ebook version from Rick Snow, at the end of every Year/type chapter is a summary and cross reference page. It shows all the varieties known, and the book has excellent photos with detailed descriptions.

Ngccoin.com, under resources has an area called VarietyPlus. Again, not all inclusive, but lists the coins they recognize. The issue with NGC is, they like to use their own Vp number. Sometimes they will offer a cross reference area, sometimes not. In my opinion, the way Ngc lists varieties needs a lot of help, it appears hodge podge.

That's a start. Hope the references help.
