Is this a D over S on a 1955 Jefferson?

Although the photo of the coin above is pretty clear, it will not allow me to get close enough to really look at the mintmark and compare the coin to known examples online.
There are quite a few possibilities for the 1955 D over S. Now, since you have the coin in hand, it is best to take a look and see if any match up almost exactly. Have a look here :

Position of the mintmark is eveything. It can eliminate some of the non-possibilities, making it easier to make the right call on what the coin is.Gary Kozera

It's all about the position of the mintmark.
For that year, they seem to have covered up the S pretty well.
My gut instinct says no, especially the way the bottom serif is looking
I don't see enough trimmings on the outer area of the D where some protrusion of the S should be.
Typically the S is a tad bit bigger than the D, but not by much.Gary Kozera
