CONECA (pronounced: CŌ´NECA) is a national numismatic organization devoted to the education of error and variety coin collectors. CONECA focuses on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, Repunched mintmarks, multiple errors, clips, double strikes, off-metals and off-centers—just to name a few. In addition to its website, CONECA publishes an educational journal, The Errorscope, which is printed and mailed to members bimonthly. CONECA offers a lending library, examination, listing and attribution services; it holds annual meetings at major conventions (referred to as Errorama) around the country.

CONECA was formed through a merger of CONE and NECA in early 1983. To learn more about the fascinating HISTORY OF THE ERROR HOBBY and THE HISTORY OF CONECA, we encourage you to visit us our main site Here

  • Possible 1953 D Washington FS-501

Need some help authenticating this 1953 D Washington Quarter. I am leaning toward FS-501 (inverted D) as I do not see the die markers for the D over S.

Authetication would be done by at attributer at either a 3rd party grading service like ANACS, NGC or PCGS. You can also contact this website by going to the FORUMS tab, choosing CONECA services and then Attributions. Under the ATTRIBUTIONS forum, put a few great photos in there with a good explanation on what the coin is and what you think it is.....

I do not know if they can "authenticate" it for you, it is a question you will need to ask them, BUT, they will attribute it for you - make a determination on whether is is an RPM, OMM or otherwise. The CONECA route is by far the cheapest.

I do not think this is RPM-001 (FS-501). It lacks the bulge on the vertical bar of the mintmark. I don't know what it is as the closeup photo is too blurry. Could you possibly get a more focused photo?

Thank you for the replies! I am definitely interested in getting some help with attribution. My photo capabilities are limited.
This being my first effort at identifying something that is out of my ability I do not know the best course of action. Go through Coneca first or Variety Vista? If the end goal is a possible 3rd party grader will either Coneca or variety vista be beneficial?

I have some updated photos and information to share with you all. I was not able to find the die crack on the forehead to attribute this to the D over S. It does have a similar die crack on the head in the hair however.

I also was not able to find the die markers under the beak to attribute this to the RPM-002.

I was able to find a matching die marker for the RPM-001 that matches both examples on the PCGS website photos. Die scratches to the right of the L in Liberty.

I agree that your marker photos look like a match. However, I still can't see the mintmark well enough to make the call. This one would most likely need to be seen in hand by an attributer to verify if it is RPM-001.

Thank you! I will send it off to James at Variety Vista. I appreciate all the help.
