  • 1923-D Peace Dollar Die Crack

I liked this coin because of the irredescent toning. At the store it had a more bluish purple coloring. Only after getting it home did I notice the die crack was circular around the whole coin.

Nice toning to the coin. A question concerning the die crack. A die crack of that magnitude is unusual and odd that it is also circular in shape. Looking at your pictures, it seems that the crack does not affect the letters it crosses. That can be caused by a couple of things; the wear of circulation on the coin has obliterated the raised areas on the letters, the crack is so fine that it does not show up in the pictures or it is not a die crack, but a die gouge.

Is there any indication of that die crack on any design elements?

I've seen this same set of cracks, or a similar set of cracks, on several Peace dollars. Close-up photos of uncirculated specimens establish without question that these are die cracks.

wavysteps: look closely at the second to the last photo. the crack goes into the G in God and the bottom of the neck.

Mike has verified that they are indeed die cracks. Neat coin.

I agree. That is a neat coin...especially with the die crack.
