CONECA (pronounced: CŌ´NECA) is a national numismatic organization devoted to the education of error and variety coin collectors. CONECA focuses on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, Repunched mintmarks, multiple errors, clips, double strikes, off-metals and off-centers—just to name a few. In addition to its website, CONECA publishes an educational journal, The Errorscope, which is printed and mailed to members bimonthly. CONECA offers a lending library, examination, listing and attribution services; it holds annual meetings at major conventions (referred to as Errorama) around the country.

CONECA was formed through a merger of CONE and NECA in early 1983. To learn more about the fascinating HISTORY OF THE ERROR HOBBY and THE HISTORY OF CONECA, we encourage you to visit us our main site Here

  • 1964D RPM NE?

I have not seen this listed but it looks like an RPM NE to me with very wide displacement.

Comments and advice welcome and appreciated. Let me know if more pics needed.

    Thanks

Here are two more pics at 200x.

My theory is: The MM punch was dragged across the die very lightly from NW to NE, then was seated and punched in the final position.

I think this is a very early die stage and is so light it wore away quickly.

This can't even be seen without the scope and even then it couldn't be seen on a slightly circ. specimen. That would explain why it hasn't been identified before.

Question is, even if I'm right, is it worth the trouble to verify it?

You may have the correct analogy of what happened. As to the worthiness to have it authenticated. I have looked in CONECA files and also Coppercoin's files and there is nothing similar to it if it is indeed a RPM.

In general, RPMs with a large spread tend to be worth more than those with hardly an spread to them. Taking into consideration that this could be a discovery piece, I would say "yes" it is worth the time and effort to have it looked at.

Hi BJ: Thanks for the response. Pleasantly surprised you're watching this late.

Whats the procedure for sending it in? Keep in mind, you can't even see the object without a scope.

Hi Dave - I would first contact Dr. Wiles to see if it is worth sending to him. If he is interested in seeing this die, then he will give you instructions on how and where to send the coin. His email address can be found on CONECA's home page under either CONECA leaders or attributers.

              Dave,
I would agree also that it should be looked at and attributed if it does indeed turn out to be an RPM. Like BJ said...a spread this wide would warrant a look. If it can be photograped, and proved to be an RPM, it should be added to the files.

                Hi Bob: Thanks.

Its on it's way to Dr. Wiles today. Let's hope it turns out to be worthwhile.

If it is, I would be honored to have you photograph it both for CONECA and coppercoins if you wish.

                  Dave,
If it does turn out to be a new RPM, Dr. Wiles will take the pics for CONECA, and I will be happy to do so for coppercoins.com once he has finished. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you!
