    Positioning of mint marks

Just wondering if someone could give me some information on the positioning of mint marks. I was looking for DDO’s and RPM on these 1944 D wheaties and noticed the different locations of the mint marks. Are these considered errors? Thanks for any information you can give

Daniel, The dies were hand punched until 1990. So the mint worker hand punched into the die the mintmarks placement. The mintmark basically could have ended up anywhere below the date. What you have above is normal, depending on where the mint worker placed the mintmark on each working die.

But, that is a great learning tool. It's a great thing to note since the exact location of the mint mark will help solidify a good attribution for rpms and can assist with ddos as well. Places like http://varietyvista.com will show you mintmark placements to help with attribution.

        Happy hunting.
