CONECA (pronounced: CŌ´NECA) is a national numismatic organization devoted to the education of error and variety coin collectors. CONECA focuses on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, Repunched mintmarks, multiple errors, clips, double strikes, off-metals and off-centers—just to name a few. In addition to its website, CONECA publishes an educational journal, The Errorscope, which is printed and mailed to members bimonthly. CONECA offers a lending library, examination, listing and attribution services; it holds annual meetings at major conventions (referred to as Errorama) around the country.

CONECA was formed through a merger of CONE and NECA in early 1983. To learn more about the fascinating HISTORY OF THE ERROR HOBBY and THE HISTORY OF CONECA, we encourage you to visit us our main site Here

    New to Forum _North Carolina

    Hello from NC
I have rejoined Coneca and the Forum and look forward to learning more about errors.

I inherited a small collection back in 2021 and have enjoyed sorting the coins out by cents, nickels, dimes, quarters, Peace, Morgan, JFK, Presidential and Sacagawea. It is amazing how many types of coins are out there and the values. I have learned to view error listings on HA.com (Heritage), Varietyvista.com, error-ref.com and more. I purchased "Mint Errors to Die For" by Joseph P. Cronin and have found that to be an invaluable resource in educating myself. I also have learned to navigate Pcgs.com for value, ddo, ddr and also population. No sooner do I look up coin, then I learn that there is more to look for! It seems to be endless fun and education. The latest version of Cherry Pickers guide arrived this week. And I have the 4th Edition of the Mega Red book. I also use Wexler's doubledie.com as an awesome reference. I still am having trouble with Strike doubling and try double dies. I hope that I will be able to post photos of coins that I have questions about here and get guidance and feedback. Looking forward to this group. Thank you.

Many people have and continue to have issues with identifying doubled dies. I tell many a folk, if the coin is older than a decade, use the guides on line to see if there is a match. Doubled dies are made of steel, so when multiple impressions were added to that sole working die, the area of doubling does not move.

Its also important to note - The description the attributors give, generally tell people where to look for the doubling. Some websites will add way too many photos, to include none that depict any doubling or pick up points / markers.

Doubled dies tend to show the doubling at the same height. Letters should be thicker. Depending on how far off the doubling is, you may see a cookie cutter style line, where one impression was placed over the other. There can be notching or commonly called split serifs. John Wexlers website doubleddie.com has a section on "worthless doubling". There, he offers a comparison of doubled dies vs machine damage. Its a good read.

I also have a few posts on my website about doubled dies. And a few on machine damage as well.

In my signature block are three posts that will help navigate and use the forum a little easier.

      Happy hunting.
