Hello coin numismatic world, Bigtime13 here. Relatively new to coin collecting. Started in 2017. Love the adventure it has taken me on. And now I’m venturing into errors and varieties. Not a member of Concea yet, but soon will be. Have questions so hoping to find answers. 1st question, differentiating between machine doubling and doubled die, during the minting process as the planchette is being struck, is it a rarity for machine doubling to occur constantly on each strike of each planchette fed into dies or will there be a slight variation for each strike. Thanks for the add.Tags: None

The MD occurs because there is a loose die, collar, or the die bounces based on striking pressure. It certainly is possible to have very similar MD on coins as the same thing is happening over and over again. There may be hundreds of thousands of coins struck with a single die set, so it is not a rarity at all. In addition, there could be subtle differences as the die or collar loosens up more and more during striking.Bob Piazza
