CONECA (pronounced: CŌ´NECA) is a national numismatic organization devoted to the education of error and variety coin collectors. CONECA focuses on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, Repunched mintmarks, multiple errors, clips, double strikes, off-metals and off-centers—just to name a few. In addition to its website, CONECA publishes an educational journal, The Errorscope, which is printed and mailed to members bimonthly. CONECA offers a lending library, examination, listing and attribution services; it holds annual meetings at major conventions (referred to as Errorama) around the country.

    PCGS Doesn't recognize my Lincoln penny coin unique error.

    I'm writing this post to get help on unique 1937 coin's error to be recognized as an attribute. Grading company named obvious bump a scratch, and returned my coin as "Genuine not gradable". I would appreciate any suggestions in this situation.

    Can you tell us what type of error you think this incuse line is?
    (It isn't a recent line or it would be shiny so they didn't put the line on the coin.)

      I found this coin with this line on it. I think this is a die break. It feels like a bump when I touch it with my finger. So, it definitely not a scratch. Also, grading process took for PCGS more than 90 days. Why? They couldn't explain it to me...

        It is a scratch. The reason you feel a bump is when metal is scratched the metal that is being scratched moves to the edges making a bump. Think what dirt does when you run your finger through it. The dirt gets displaced to the otter edges making a farrow. This what metal does when it is scratched. Your scratch is a very old scratch. If it was a die break it would be filled in. See link.

          First, it is not a die variety , so there is nothing to attribute. Die varieties are re-punched mint marks, Doubled dies, re-punched dates, overdates, over minmarks and a few others. Those are things that were done by mint employees to the die that are trackable and documentable.


          You can try having an examiner here look on the forum offer his opinion. You go to main page of the forum. Under CONECA SERVICES start a post with as much info as you can, with very good photos.

          They probably will not want to fight along side you against PCGS, it is a fight that must be done by the customer. I suggest speaking to a manager at PCGS, but he will not be able to do much.

          People here might have changed your decision to send this in since to me, in my opinion, almost looks like a knife cut or simply damage it received some where in circulation


          Die cracks look a lot more jagged and have many spider cracks. I have a few posted on my web site. I will add photos here for you to see the difference.
