yes, these features are raised as they were "etched" into the die for whatever reasons. you can prob read up more about this stuff on VW or links from VW.
LVA's book(s) i'm sure cover it and probably RW Burdette and/or QD Bowers books on silver dollars also. perhaps even more info in other books about minting processes during the 18/19th centuries.coinfacts.com - conecaonline.info - board.conecaonline.org/forum/numismatic-site-links - briansvarietycoins.com - coppercoins.com - cuds-on-coins.com - doubleddie.com - error-ref.com - franklinlover.yolasite.com - ikegroup.info -lincolncentresource.com - maddieclashes.com - money.org - ngccoin.com/price-guide/world - ngccoin.com/census - ngccoin.com/resources/counterfeit-detection - nnp.wustl.edu - pcgs.com/pop - pcgs.com/coinfacts - pcgs.com/photograde - varietyvista.com - vamworld.com

Neat and thank you for the reply. I hadn't heard of "Acid Etching" on dies. Another interesting tidbit to file away and see if I can recall it if I ever run across it again.
BTW-I just received Burdette's book "Mine to Mint". It is very interesting and has some great images, sketches, and information. I'll try to keep this in mind when I get to that section.
ps. As a bonus, this is a current thread! LOL
pss. What year is your coin?
