CONECA (pronounced: CŌ´NECA) is a national numismatic organization devoted to the education of error and variety coin collectors. CONECA focuses on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, Repunched mintmarks, multiple errors, clips, double strikes, off-metals and off-centers—just to name a few. In addition to its website, CONECA publishes an educational journal, The Errorscope, which is printed and mailed to members bimonthly. CONECA offers a lending library, examination, listing and attribution services; it holds annual meetings at major conventions (referred to as Errorama) around the country.

    1969S Penny

    Hey all,

    This will be my first posted excluding the "introduce yourself" post I made a week or so ago. I would love to get some opinions on this penny I found when going through an uncirculated 1960S tube. I can't find anything like this on Variety Vista, so would love some feedback. This is a 1969S penny that has some characteristics that I have not ran across. The date may have doubling, but all my coins look like double dies to me, so am not qualified to make that call ,.What are your thoughts?. I did not upload a close up of the date but can add to it later if need be. I would like to focus on the words "liberty", the "VDB" and also Lincoln's beard. The first photo I'm posting shows a full photo of the coin. Upon zooming in on the coin, I see what looks like it could be doubling on the beard, but I can't tell if it's a double die or machine doubling. I zoomed in and took a close up photo of the beard (2nd photo), and also took a close up of the beard at a side angle (3rd photo). The "doubling" is not flat, so again, would love some feedback.. The 4th photo I am uploading is of the word "liberty". The "rty" looks different than the "libe" so what are you thoughts about that? Lastly, the 4th photo I'm uploading is the VDB. The VDB looks stranger than the rest of the coin, but again, I'm not educated enough to really say what's going on with that. Thanks in advance for your opinions and help.! PS: I might add: I do have the red book, look at variety vista, coppercoins, etc. but am too new to be confident in what I think I may see.

    Once you see a true doubled die that you find, its a great feeling.

    In my opinion, on this coin, the LIBERTY appears to be machine damage. Some refer it as machine doubling. Its lower, step like and makes the devices (letters, numbers, buildings, animals etc) look thinner and almost damaged.

    A true doubled die should have the impressions at the same height.

    Although extreme, you can use your favorite search engine and search for
    1955 Lincoln cent doubled die

    1969S Lincoln cent doubled die

    1972 Lincoln cent doubled die die 1 or die 2

    The point I want to make is that that doubled die has both impressions at nearly the same height.

          Yes and no.
          Many different classes of Double Dies. All have a different affect on the planchet that is struck. Please read about the classes of Double Dies.

            FYI.....
            error-ref.com gives a very easy to understanding run down on the minting process. I've found that alot of questions can be "self answered" by watching videos and reading from that website. There's a saying I'm sure that either heard or will hear is " read the book BEFORE getting the coin". I hope this helps.
