Hi Bob, here is where my research has led me. Coin world Oct 20, 1982 ran a story on this variety as well as other over-mint marks. Here is the pic that was featured within the story.Attached Files

Based on that photo alone, I would think your variety looks like it. It's amazing that you managed to find that article from almost 40 years ago. As I stated, I am not proficient on Half Dollars (other than loving the design). Hopefully someone else here would know something about it.Bob Piazza

Here is a listing for a 50c 1942 D/S I found in the CERRYPICKER'S GUIDE, Second Edition 1991, page 168. Note it says, "There are many 1942-D specimens with distortion around the D mintmark which are incorrectly thought to be the D/S variety".

Nice find. I haven't been able to find anything aside of the one article from Coin World. I can see why the pictured D with distortion would be discredited as there is no serif's, or middle bar of the S that can be seen in the hole of the D that is visible in my coin.

It is some sort of strong, albeit unusual, machine doubling that permeates parts of the reverse.
