  • 1942 D/S Walking Liberty Half W.Breen 5195?

Hi Guys, I'm new to this forum. I think this is the D over S. Let me know what you think... thank you.

Now that's something. This is not my area of expertise, but it does look very interesting. We will wait and see if we can get some other opinions. It is not any of the listed 1942 D or S RPMs in VV.

Hi Bob, here is where my research has led me. Coin world Oct 20, 1982 ran a story on this variety as well as other over-mint marks. Here is the pic that was featured within the story.

Based on that photo alone, I would think your variety looks like it. It's amazing that you managed to find that article from almost 40 years ago. As I stated, I am not proficient on Half Dollars (other than loving the design). Hopefully someone else here would know something about it.

Here is a listing for a 50c 1942 D/S I found in the CERRYPICKER'S GUIDE, Second Edition 1991, page 168. Note it says, "There are many 1942-D specimens with distortion around the D mintmark which are incorrectly thought to be the D/S variety".

Nice find. I haven't been able to find anything aside of the one article from Coin World. I can see why the pictured D with distortion would be discredited as there is no serif's, or middle bar of the S that can be seen in the hole of the D that is visible in my coin.

I'd have to see it in person and make an overlay before I would add it to the files. From the photos, it looks promising.

That would be great. How do I proceed?

It is some sort of strong, albeit unusual, machine doubling that permeates parts of the reverse.
