1884 O Morgan Extensive "Die Rust"?
15 - 20220824_144526.jpg I acquired this coin in the late 1960s but mislaid and promptly forgot about it. Recently found it in an old purse. Nothing special about the coin other than the 1 and first 8 are doubled and Lady Liberty has what appears to be extensive "die rust" distributed across the face, eye, ear, hair, neck, and cap. I've read Morgan descriptions that included mention of small amounts of die rust but nothing to the degree as seen on this coin. Is die rust the cause of the raise marks on Lady Liberty. It does appear to be rust related. If you are into Morgan VAMs, check the 1884-O listings at vamworld.com.

Over the years, I have seen quite a few coins struck with rusted/pitted dies. I would ask the very same question that Gary does. Are the spots raised or incuse. It would stand to reason that if the pits are raised, then the die was the culprit. If the surface texture has incuse spots, I would lean towards post mint damage of some sort.Bob Piazza

Further examination of the coin revealed three distinct lines inside the mint mark center. 23 - 20220825_170334.jpg

A change in camera and lighting angle for the area between the eye and hairline tends to confirm the "spots" are raised giving the impression of silver sand sprinkled on Lady Liberty.Attached Files

Based on what you are reporting, I would say it is the result of a pitted die. As far as the 'lines' in the mintmark, they cold come from anything scratching the surface of the die in that area. I would not believe it would be related to the rust.Bob Piazza
