1959 Lincoln Cent Question
I'm going through a roll of 1959 P Cents and I find over half of them have a "hook" on the top bar of E in WE. Is this common, and do you think it's an engraving issue? If not, any idea what might have caused it?

As a true amateur I'm not sure I'll be able to tell, but I'll see if I can find some common markers and let you know what I find.Originally posted by mustbebob View PostDo you know if the coins with this anomaly are all the same die? If they are not the same die, we could say it may be a master die issue.

I've checked and photographed five of them. I'm guessing different dies. The crispness if the hook varies quite a bit, die scratches seem quite different and one has some doubling on the last T of TRUST. Possible doubling under the L on one too. I am posting pics of each one below.Originally posted by 59burk19 View Post

Those are some nice pictures. Thank you for taking so many and posting them. After looking at them, I am convinced that they are all not the same die, and that we are probably dealing with a Master Die issue. This means that the master die hubbed many different working dies, and each one of them would carry this anomaly. Unfortunately, that also means there are millions and millions of coins out there with this anomaly, so as with most master die issues, there is no premium for these coins. Also, as the die deteriorates, this part of the die would be one of the first to degrade so there are probably many millions more where this anomaly just isn't visible because of the deterioration.Bob Piazza

Thanks Bob. That's pretty much what I thought when I looked closer at the five, and after a little thought, came to the some conclusion that there must be a bunch of them out there. I really appreciate your taking the time to help with my education of varieties!Originally posted by mustbebob View PostThose are some nice pictures. Thank you for taking so many and posting them.
