CONECA (pronounced: CŌ´NECA) is a national numismatic organization devoted to the education of error and variety coin collectors. CONECA focuses on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, Repunched mintmarks, multiple errors, clips, double strikes, off-metals and off-centers—just to name a few. In addition to its website, CONECA publishes an educational journal, The Errorscope, which is printed and mailed to members bimonthly. CONECA offers a lending library, examination, listing and attribution services; it holds annual meetings at major conventions (referred to as Errorama) around the country.

    Mystery Planchet!

    Hello Again!,

    I just found this 1998-D quarter that weighs only about 4.66 grams! What planchet could it be??? Thanks!

      The strength of the letters around the rim lead me to believe this is environmental damage. If you look at the underweight planchet coin from the Heritage page you can see the weakness of the lettering from the underweight planchet. I believe your first coin was bathed in acid which removed 1 gram of coin weight.

          I believe it is a coincidence. However, I am not an expert on foreign planchet struck coinage.

            I agree completely that the subject coin has taken an acid bath or has environmental damage. If this were struck on a foreign/incorrect planchet, the surface of the coin would still be relatively smooth.
