CONECA (pronounced: CŌ´NECA) is a national numismatic organization devoted to the education of error and variety coin collectors. CONECA focuses on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, Repunched mintmarks, multiple errors, clips, double strikes, off-metals and off-centers—just to name a few. In addition to its website, CONECA publishes an educational journal, The Errorscope, which is printed and mailed to members bimonthly. CONECA offers a lending library, examination, listing and attribution services; it holds annual meetings at major conventions (referred to as Errorama) around the country.

CONECA was formed through a merger of CONE and NECA in early 1983. To learn more about the fascinating HISTORY OF THE ERROR HOBBY and THE HISTORY OF CONECA, we encourage you to visit us our main site Here

hello everyone, new to coin collecting..hunting .. you name it..

I'm new to coin collecting and have always been a collector of things rare or unique or just catches my eye. I'm not a paying member since pretty new to everything and want to get more acclimated with everything. I recently got a small collection of coins from my dad when he passed earlier this year and have been noticing some with unique characteristics. Being OCD and ADHD what do I do? I hyperfocus and have to find out every last detail or validation before I move on to another thing LOL. Well, look forward to chats and finding unique things about coins..and showing some I might have too! Oh . Alex here

Hey Alex, Welcome! Sorry to hear about the loss of your dad. Hopefully this hobby can be something help remember him by. I just started collecting this year myself so I've been trying to absorb as much info and insight as I can. I look forward to seeing what you find and share.

    Happy Holidays!

    Nathan

Welcome aboard. In this variety and error hobby some things can go unanswered. Once a coin gets into circulation, it can be subject to all kinds of post mint damage (PMD).

There are the classic errors and known varieties and those are pretty easy for a seasoned collector to identify.

Since 2002 to now, the US Mint has stepped up the quality control to the point where minted errors are not escaping the mint like they used to. So newer errors tend to fetch a higher premium if they are in uncirculated condition or close to it.

Its a good practice to think logically about the minting process and how that process can apply to what your seeing on the coin in your hand. There are some decent references out there and one can hope they differentiate between the multiple squeeze era and single squeeze era.

One good thing is the US Mint does offer some insight on the making of coins, so some research on the minting of U S coins should reveal some reliable resources of information, epecially if its from a .gov site.

A free website to look up some sort of value and identify the type of coin it is can be found at
Numismedia.com under the fair market value area.

ngccoin.com has a pull down for resources like variety plus or a price guide.

      Pcgs.com has the same.

If you have questions, fire away or, start a new post (probably best qustions wont get buried). I have additional helpful links in my signature block.

      Happy Hunting.
