In my opinion, it is:
8.00 shipping to PCGS with tracking. (insurance extra).
35.00 for the Holder and Mint Error examination fee plus grading of coin.
25.00+ for the return shipping plus insurance
Don't forget the cost of "membership" - ANACS does not have a Membership fee.
ANACS sets up at a LOT of local shows. IF you submit it to the representative, the cost of shipping TO ANACS is free (you still pay return postage to you).
ANACS also does not charge that much for an error or variety.
PLUS with ANACS you can get a discount on the variety and examination fee if you sign up for the perk called "ANACS insider".
I personally don't use PCGS, so I do not know if there are any additional fees.
In my opinion, the $300.00 price for coins is subjective - there aren't any really solid go-to publications that offer a constant update of error prices. Since 2003 90% of the "true major mint errors" are not escaping the mint. This is a fee tier that will appease those that want to send in those lesser mint error coins that they are finding with over powered microscopes. If they can see it on 10x magnification, then it may be worth it. Its all about two things....either sentinetal value or return on investment....
NOTE: The PCGS tier mentioned above is for ERRORS - NOT varieties.
Varieties are :
Doubled Dies
Re-Punched Mint Marks
Over Mint Marks
Re-Punched Dates
Misplaced Dates
Over Dates
