In my opinion, it is:
8.00 shipping to PCGS with tracking. (insurance extra).
35.00 for the Holder and Mint Error examination fee plus grading of coin.
25.00+ for the return shipping plus insurance
Don't forget the cost of "membership" - ANACS does not have a Membership fee.
ANACS sets up at a LOT of local shows. IF you submit it to the representative, the cost of shipping TO ANACS is free (you still pay return postage to you).
ANACS also does not charge that much for an error or variety.
PLUS with ANACS you can get a discount on the variety and examination fee if you sign up for the perk called "ANACS insider".
I personally don't use PCGS, so I do not know if there are any additional fees.
In my opinion, the $300.00 price for coins is subjective - there aren't any really solid go-to publications that offer a constant update of error prices. Since 2003 90% of the "true major mint errors" are not escaping the mint. This is a fee tier that will appease those that want to send in those lesser mint error coins that they are finding with over powered microscopes. If they can see it on 10x magnification, then it may be worth it. Its all about two things....either sentinetal value or return on investment....
NOTE: The PCGS tier mentioned above is for ERRORS - NOT varieties.
Varieties are :
Doubled Dies
Re-Punched Mint Marks
Over Mint Marks
Re-Punched Dates
Misplaced Dates
Over Dates

It seems to me that there is a bias building against ANACS that wasn't there just a few years ago. I used to read that if a person had an " error" coin, ANACS was the go to place for verification. Now that the other most recognized grading companies have realized that they could be making money off of the growing interest in those type coins, ANECS is simply being left out in the cold. I geuss there isn't room for three at the top.

In my opinion, ANACS grades coins stricter than all the others. Grab any common same year Morgan dollar from ANACS and PCGS thats been graded at MS64. Its like night and day. Its even more evident to me at higher grades. I typically steer away from PCGS.
But, ANACS also charges close to 60 bucks to authenticate and slab a foriegn error. ANACS apparently has issues with finding and holding onto foriegn experts to validate coins from certain countries.
I can imagine some companies do not want to deal with certain coin types so they simply up their prices. I honestly believe that slabbing a coin is good if one is going to re-sell a coin. Plus, I believe people dont typically care for the ANACS slab design and colors. Otherwise....
If enough research is done and marked in a spreadsheet and labeled on a holder like from coinworld, it serves the same purpose as getting it slabbed.
The third party grading services are a business and are slowly ramping up their prices to see how much people are willing to pay before they give up on them.
I slab select (dramatic) FS variety coins because they can bring a significant premium to the right audience. I also slab any Morgan Dollar that is proof like or deep mirror proof like. But....
As of the last 5+ years, I have only made 1 or 2 sumbissions. I typically go to the higher end auction houses (ebay not included) and purchase already slabbed coins to save on cost and time.Last edited by MintErrors; 08-07-2025, 06:53 AM.
