    1963 Franklin Half DDO Help

    Hi all,
l have looked at different sites on Franklin Half Variety’s but I’m just not sure which where this one lands. If there is anyone experienced with these, I would appreciate your help. Thanks

Varietyvista only has a handful of DDO's that are MS. The rest are Proofs ( indicated by PR). So, in a nutshell it can only be

    2, 5, 6, 11,13, or 14

I suggest reading the description that James Wiles gives, and see if you can match it up that way.

In my opinion, these can be a little minor to my tastes, but they are recognized. On your coin, the LIB looks like some severe die wear, the letters look awful flat.

Thanks MintErrors for taking a look. I did look at the listings on Varietyvista. I wasn’t able to match up the Y in liberty with any of the non-proof listings as you have suggested. I guess I will just keep an eye out for any other sources that I can find. Thanks again for taking a look at this one for me.

when you run into a denom/year/mm that has a lot listed, it is best to orientate yourself with secondary confirmation diagnostics "pups", especially where the differences will be kind of minor between the listings, which when there are a lot, is quite often. it really is about the only way to effectively proceed. if you don't, it is tantamount to going over and just banging your head against a hard wall, which at times, could actually be more effective.

There is another site for Franklin's that might have better photos and maybe more listings....

Thanks MintErrors, I went to that site as well and was unsuccessful. I’m thinking that I might just send it in to Dr Wiles and let him sort it out for me as the sites I have found make reference to VV listings as examples of known variety’s. Than you for your help.

After going through VV’s non-proof examples again, through the shadows of the closeup of VV’s Y it looks pretty close to 13 however I think I will go ahead and send it in for verification.

fwiw, not to take away business from those doing attributions but if you just start investing the the authoritative references (find out which ones are most up to date), you will have far more value in books than in random one-off submissions.

The original poster, in my opinion had/has a decent eye and a decent logical common sense to his method. He probably sees something in this coin that isn't quite conveyed via the photographs presented, and it's his choice to send it in to see if it is worthy of a listing or is already a recognized variety. I am just sayin....

I'm not trying to bust anything here, just laying down my perception of the post overall. James Wiles might be a tad expensive compared to other attributors, but it's a choice one has to make. It would easily cost several times over to send it into a third party grading service, and if one wants closure on the coin, it's a good enough reason for me.

Update: I sent the Coin to Dr Wiles for attribution and this Franklin was attributed as a new DDO variety. Thank you for everyone’s help and comments.

                        gratz on your discovery!

I'm kind bummed i wasn't able to see soemthing from the images to send you down that path. i've helped several others with discoveries and i enjoy that process.

                        a 2 year update. i'll take it

next order of business, taking better images so us volunteers can help you better going forward!

will/have you submitted the coin to anacs (perhaps with some others?) for first reported/discovery attribution? a suggestion, send a copy of the originals as sometimes originals aren't returned by the TPG. had that happened once (i won't name the TPG) and i was bummed cuz there were several in the group.

Thanks for the critique on my photographs I will try to improve. The coin was submitted to the above referenced TPG prior to submitting the coin/ coins (5 others that turned out to be the same variety) all submitted for variety attribution. Through my experience, I would not ask them to attribute a coins varieties unless I was positive the coin had already received an attribution by someone with the respect and ability to make designations such as the ( you said) very expensive Dr James Wiles. I paid the TPG for there encapsulation and attribution (there words) not a DDO. Very expensive lesson indeed.

I won't ask the TPG. I will say only ANACS and SEGS encapsulate non cherrypicker varieties.. Just as advised above. Also send a copy of the letter, but wait to send the varieties, until the new listing is added to his site.
